FIGHT STORY BY VAMSIDHAR CHATURVEDULA
Genre: Fiction
No. Of pages-338 pages
Fight story by Vamsidhar Chaturvedula is a story about two people named Karthik and Veera Bhadra. This is a rather unique story that begins with the reader getting introduced to Veera Bhadra in a very disturbing setting. The tone of the story is set from that moment on. We read about Kartik and Veera Bhadra following their respective journeys from childhood to adulthood and what stands out about this story is that the vibe of this story stays serious and intense even during their childhoods.
Both these characters have polar opposite upbringings - Karthik is born in a world of great abundance and Veera Bhadra grows up in dire conditions moving from a cremation ground to a fishing village and then to a mining town. Despite such great difference in their circumstances Karthik and Veera Bhadra have quite a lot in common. Both these characters are extremely gifted fighters and both are greatly revered by the people who know them.
This story has a vast plot in terms of the themes it covers and the characters it talks about. We read about the perils faced by the poor people of a fishing village as they are terrorized by the goon who makes their lives living hell, a town plagued by the evils of drugs and prostitution, illegal fighting pits and many sinister and vile power games.
What stands out in case of this book is the substance that each theme has. One prominent aspect of this book is how it lets the reader also see the perspectives of those who are the wrongdoers, thus driving home the fact that human beings can find ways to justify just about anything.
Apart from Karthik and Veera Bhadra, there are many other characters that contribute to the story in a meaningful way. All these characters have their own backstories which make their presence in the story convincing and strengthens the plot on the whole. This story introduces the reader to the world of fighting. Characters like Akihito,Malcolm and Adrian make the story more engaging. We read about different characters and their respective approach to the art of fighting which makes this book a fascinating read.
This book gets quite spiritual and philosophical. It also explores the Japanese concept of Rakurai in which a fighter becomes as fast as a thunderbolt after following a certain training regimen. There is so much to this story that the reader might read it slowly but wont get bored. The writing is simple and not that ornate for the most part but there are certain parts in the book where the writing gets very beautiful and lyrical. Overall this book does not give the reader a regular story and it gives one a different yet refreshing experience.
