My Thoughts :
Inner Trek was my first read of 2022 and my reading year couldn't have started better. Through this book, the author has shared his experience of trekking around Mount Kailash and taking a holy dip in Lake Mana Sarovar.
The way this journey began for the author was rather terrifying. He was threatened by a mob boss in 2012 and the author decided that if he got out this dangerous situation, he would undertake the above mentioned trek to pay a tribute to the Gods. This journey finally began in 2016.
Mount Kailash and Lake Mana Sarovar have always held an interest for me in the periphery of my thoughts. The mysticism surrounding them has always been fascinating for me and this book was not only informative but also insightful.
This book engaged my interest right from the start and I ended up reading it in a single sitting. The writing and the language is easy to follow and the flow of reading this book is smooth. Even though this book is non-fiction, it doesn't get boring or tiresome even once. While reading this book, I couldn't help but feel the desire to undertake this ardous journey myself. The author shares every detail about his journey with a lot of transparency in terms of the cost, travel agents and the perils involved. This book is so informative that I felt I was also undertaking this trek. The descriptions are vivid and detailed in an engrossing manner.
What I found especially interesting about this book was that the author made it known right in the beginning that he didn't have a religious or even a spiritual bent of mind. Therefore, reading about what is supposed to be a deeply spiritual journey through the author's perspective was fascinating. The thoughts expressed in this book are simple but they have substance and depth and that is what makes this an impressive book.
The part where the author takes the holy dip in Lake Mana Sarovar made me tear up a bit. I am not a big traveler but I do hope to experience in reality what I read in Inner Trek. This book has a lot of photographs that do everything to enhance the reading experience.
Personally, I would like to recommend this book to everyone who wants to read a good book because this book checks all the boxes.
