Written In Blood by Ankita Verma is her second title and is a thriller that deals with the themes of religious extremism, terrorism, politics and intelligence operations with a hint of romance.
This story is taking place in the present day India uses two major past events to provide context - The Kashmiri Pandit exodus of 1991 and a terror attack in Tel Aviv in a conflict torn Israel of 2005. On one hand, there is Sana Sikander Sheikh who is a lead reporter in Kashmiri Times in 1991 and she is in love with Anurag Koul who is a Kashmiri Pandit but the militancy ridden atmosphere of Kashmir takes a toll on their love. On the other hand, there is Shezi, the son of an Indian diplomat who has a close encounter with death in a terror attack in Tel Aviv in 2005.
In the present day, Sana lives in Delhi and is the owner of India's leading news channel called India Truth and is a single mother to Aliya who has recently returned from Delhi. Inspite of having led a privileged life, Aliya has her own inner demons and is an aloof young woman. Shezi has grown up to become a bright architecture student but his past still haunts him.
An international terror organization is planning something dangerous that can put the entire country at risk and how this threat will affect everyone is what the story is about.
This book deals with some sensitive topics but it maintains a balance with how the story pans out and how the characters are portrayed. The characters are fleshed out well and all the characters have a good space in the story. One gets a chance to understand all the key characters. I feel Sana Sikander Sheikh should get a story of her own because of how strong and inspiring she is. This story also deals with the theme of complicated family dynamics with a lot of clarity.
The romance angle in the story definitely stirs some bittersweet feelings. Love is complicated and one does not heed sense when one catches genuine feelings and the consequences become insignificant. This emotion has been captured very well in the story through how the characters act.
The story moves at a good pace and does not slow down. The progression of the story is made more impactful because new details keep getting added and there is no stalling in how the events in the story occur. The writing flows smoothly and is easy to understand. The writing isn't pretentious at all. The simplicity and effortlessness of the writing is the reason for it being so effective.
The suspense of the story was something that I did not see coming so I am happy about that and the ending of the story was definitely satisfying to read.
Overall, this was a gripping and an entertaining page turner and it did not disappoint.
My Rating - 4.25 stars
