Who Stole My Job? by Sunil Mishra - Book Review

Who Stole My Job? by Sunil Mishra is the story of an IT company, Creative Tech and it’s employees. The company hires an American CEO, Marshal Scott, to bring back the glory that is on the way of becoming a thing of the past for Creative Tech. Marshal Scott starts his stint as the CEO of Creative Tech, on a very positive note motivating all the employees and bringing a lot of hope for Creative Tech’s future. As the transformation begins in the company, employees start facing high pressure situations and as a result of that, a general feeling of dissatisfaction engulfs the organization.

This book through its story has tried to portray the changing employment scenario in the IT companies in the corporate world. There are many lessons to be learnt from the story through the perspectives of different characters.  One gets an insight into how things work for middle management employees as well as top level employees. Through the four main characters ( Satvik, Marshal Scott, Vikas and Ajesh) and their respective journeys, the reader gets a wholesome picture and also a variety of lessons learnt from their mistakes.

This story focuses on how even though it is okay to bring about a transformation in how a company functions, the top management should still respect the prevalent organization culture and should establish connection with the employees instead of alienating them.

Even though this book is fiction, it feels more like a concept being explained through a story. Many times while reading this book, I got the feeling of reading a case study of a comapy called Creative Tech. For a company to be successful,  the  vision of the top management should be in alignment with the hardwork of the employees at the ground level. This is one message that is conveyed by this story, time and again.

One of the major takeaways from this book is that often in life, we think we know the entire picture but in reality we know only our perspective and hence, sometimes there is no definite right or wrong.  Reading Satvik’s perspective made me feel that Marshal Scott was in the wrong but reading Marshal Scott’s perspective made me realize that he wasn’t wrong but had a different approach.

The story makes us realize that one has to constantly keep updating and upgrading one’s skills to be in the beneficiary of the changes that take place in the industry and that one must be open to learning and embracing new things and moving on with changing times is imperative.

In all honesty, this is a book that one can learn a lot from but it is not an especially entertaining or an interesting read. This is a quick read but not a light one. If you want to read a story about the changes in the IT industry and if you are someone who works in an IT company and want to read something that you might be able to relate to or if you are a student who plans to work in an IT company eventually, then you can pick this one up.

My Rating – 3.5/5 stars
